-- Yamazaki self defence and Weapons course --
Two members of Seaford Karate Club attended a course
in Brighton on the 1st June 2007 under Sensei Kiyoshi
Yamazaki 8th Dan on his tour of the UK
. Sensei Simon
Oliver 5th Dan who is the co-ordinator for the JKR-UK
(Japan Karate-Do Ryobu-Kai-UK) was also in
attendance.
The first hour of the course covered self defence with
Sensei Yamazaki demonstrating the force of ki energy in
breaking out of your opponents grip, including defence
from a sitting position.
The second hour saw us practice the Tonfa. Sensei
Yamazaki took us slowly through some basic techniques
from kata Sanshin and then we paired up for some
attacks and defences using the weapon. By the end of the class their were some sore toes and
bruised wrists all round, but a good session with Sensei Yamazaki who took time to teach each
and everyone of us who turned up.
The tonfa (side-handle baton) was developed as a weapon by the Okinawans, specifically for
use in conjunction with karate. Two tonfa were often used simultaneously, and were very
efficient against armed assailants.
Traditional use: Originally a bean or rice grinder, the tonfa's circular movements as a farm
implement evolved into its rotating strikes as a weapon. The side of the tonfa was used for
blocking, and the ends for direct punches.
Current use: Now an advanced karate training
aid, the tonfa aids development of block-andstrike
strategies and upper-body strength.
Martin Dean and Steve Jakes both enjoyed the
session and learnt a lot from Sensei Yamazaki
and Sensei Simon Oliver. However a lot of
repetitive practice is required to be able to use
these weapons effectively. Once mastered
they can become devastating weapons, as
shown by Sensei Yamazaki, but in our hands
the only person we managed to injure was
ourselves.
As an instructor, every now and then its good
to remember how a complete beginner feels in
a martial arts class.
-- Seaford Carnival 2007 --
Sun hats were not needed today as seven members from Seaford Karate club braved the
elements to take part in the Seaford Carnival over the May bank holiday. The cold winds were
soon followed by pouring rain which helped dampen the mood as we marched our way along
the seafront handing out leaflets to a meagre crowd. When we finally got to the carnival fields
we made our way to the Seaford Karate Club stall which was displaying a few trophies, belts,
break boards, pads and a slam man. We were joined by few more members of the club and
were visited by more members to show their support. After another hour in the rain we decided
that the public had had enough and very shortly we packed up and followed them home.
Many thanks to Angie, Rose, Simon, Kieran, Emily and Matthew who joined Sensei Martin in
giving up their Sunday to get totally soaked through. It was great to see others including Matt,
Gareth, Gavin and Jake at the stall, as well as Kelly, Denise and her boys who will hopefully be
joining us soon.
-- 1st E.K.K. Kata Championships --
Seventeen members from Seaford Karate Club attended the 1st
English Karate Kan
Invitational championships, organised by Enzo
Quirino, held in New Malden, London on 13th May 2007. With over
three hundred kata competitors entered into 58 different events this
proved to be a very tough tournament with top quality opposition
from many English and British champions. It was great to see Dave
Robinson from Sneyd Karate Club keeping his eyes open as the
Tatmai Chief referee, and also
Ganesh from West London
Karate Club, old friends from
A.S.K.A.
The first events saw seven of
our juniors entered into the slamman
competition. Despite still
being relative novices at this
event Gareth Muller (0-3) and Connor Smith (2-1, 3-0, 0-3)
both won bronze medals, while Emily Delaloye (3-0, 0-3)
and Sam Kent (2-1, 2-1, 0-3) went one better, both winning
Silver in their respective categories.
First up in the kata saw Finley Jakes, 8th Kyu, in his first
competition win his first two rounds 2-1, 2-1 before losing 0-
3. In the repercharge Finley was squeezed out of the bronze
medal losing 0-3, but showed some great spirit in his karate.
Gareth Muller won his first two rounds 3-0,
3-0 before losing
0-3. In the repercharge he won again 3-0 and took home a
bronze medal.
With over fourty kids in the next event Chris Fleischer lost his first round 0-3 against the overall winner and again had a chance in the repercharge but lost this 1-2. Connor Smith had a bye in the first round winning 3-0 and then narrowly lost 1-2 in the next round against some tough opposition.
Emily Delaloye won her first round 3-0 but then lost to the overall winner 0-3 giving her another chance in the repercharge where she won 3-0 to take bronze.
Damien Shepherd lost his first round to a much more
experienced competitor 0-3. Sam Kent narrowly lost first
round 0-3 but came back stronger in the repercharge winning
2-1 for a bronze medal.
Matthew Delaloye and Sully Mayhew both in their first competition performed magnificently in the novice boys kata. Despite an early set back for Sully 0-3 he came back strong in the repercharge to win 3-0 to take a bronze while Matthew won three rounds 3-0, 3-0, and 3-0 in the final to win the first gold of the day.
Matthew Killick then followed in the 13-15 category winning the final 3-0 to double our gold tally. Natalie Boden and Denise Robinson were the only ones entered into their categories and received automatic gold medals and also added into a higher event where both girls finished with bronze medals losing to some very experienced competitors.
In the Men’s black belt category Steve Jakes received a bye 3-0 before going on to win 5-0 in his second round. The semi final saw him against a top competitor where he lost 0- 5. Garry Wright in his first competition for 10 years saw him start strong winning 2-1 and 5-0 before losing again in the semi final 0-5. Both competitors taking well deserved bronze medals.
In the pairs kata Matthew Delaloye and Sully Mayhew faced 64 other teams in their event winning their first round 3-0 before losing 0-3. In the same event Matthew Killick and Sam Kent won 3-0, 3-0, 2-1 before just being edged out of bronze by the eventual winners 0-3.
Denise and Natalie teamed up and won bronze in their division despite losing 0-3 in the semi final. While in the senior division Emily and Chris won 2-1 before losing 0-3. Angie and Rose won 3-0 before a wobble in Chinte saw them lose 1-2, and Steve and Garry lost 0-3 in the first round.
The 3 person team kata was the last event and a make shift team of Sam, Matthew K and Sully lost first round 0-3. Connor, Chris and Damien won the first round 3-0 but lost in the quarter finals 0-3. Our last team of Angie, Rose and Emily won 3-0, 3-0 before facing a Welsh team who went on to win, and lost 0-3 in the semi final taking our last bronze of the day.
Well done to everyone who entered and gained lots more experience.
Our final tally on the day was 4 GOLD, 3 SILVER and 11 BRONZE medals finishing 5th out of 16 on the medal table.

-- A.S.K.A. Panel Grading, April 2007 --
The first panel grading of 2007 took place at Sneyd Karate Club under the A.S.K.A. Senior Panel,
consisting of A.S.K.A. President Jack Warner 6th Dan, A.S.K.A. Chief Instructor Colin Hexley 5th
Dan and senior instructors Ben Brown 5th Dan and Mick Davies 5th Dan.
The pre-grading took place on 17th March 2007 at Sneyd Karate Club and the teaching was taken
by Colin Hexley assisted by the other senior grades including Sensei Jack Warner. All the basic
principles of Shotokan karate were covered with kihon, kata and kumite explained in depth.
The grading also took place at Sneyd Karate Club on the 28th April 2007 with six very nervous
students attempting their respective grades. Congratulations go to those who passed (including Seaford's Angie Pepper far left) after a
tough grading under the watchful eye of the A.S.K.A. technical committee.
