Seaford Karate Club were hosts for the last pre-grading of the year which saw our Chief instructor Colin Hexley 5th Dan travel down from Birmingham to take us through three hours of training. Other senior instructors who made the long trip down included Sensei Ben Brown 5th Dan and Mick Davis 5th Dan who also brought members of their clubs.

Sensei Mick Davis and Sensei Colin HexleyOver 20 students were treated to a body balance warm up, taught by Sensei Hexley, which includes movements from Tai chi and Yoga. After ten minutes we were all feeling our legs burning and sweating profusely as the music helped take our minds away from the agony.

The karate training started with kumite, switching partners for six bouts making sure that all those grading had a chance to spar with Sensei Hexley and show their fighting spirit and
variety of technique.

After the first hour we were into basics and Sensei was adamant to make sure all the techniques were performed properly with good use of stances, foot movement and
emphasis on hip work.

Then Sensei started to look at kicking combinations and spent a lot of time looking at generating good power from the hips in Yoko geri kekomi and mawashi geri. Students worked
in pairs and practiced drills ensuring good control, with a penalty for either lack of control or weak kicks.

Sensei Hexley and Sensei Davis briefly looked at Jiyu Ippon Kumite expressing what the panel are looking for in particularly good distance and timing of techniques and maintaining a good fighting spirit that was shown earlier in their kumite.

Finally the day finished with the grading panel of Sensei's looking at those students taking their grading. The students would perform their tokui kata and then the senior instructors would give each individual student advice and ways to improve their performance and technique.

-- Annecy School Fair 2007 --

Twenty-five students from Seaford Karate Club took part in the Summer fete at Annecy school on Saturday 7th July 2007. Many of the karate students attend Annecy primary school in Seaford and Sensei Martin was very pleased with the attendance.SKC at Annecy School Fate

The demonstration started with all the students showing off the powerful basic punches, blocks and kicks that Shotokan karate is well known for. This was followed by all twenty-five students performing a team kata Heian Shodan showing lots of spirit and big kiais followed by Angie Pepper, Rose Franks and Emily Delaloye who performed kata Chinte.

A demonstration of pairwork saw Connor attack Damien in Kihon Ippon Kumite while Rose and Angie performed Jiyu Ippon Kumite and Sensei Martin and Sensei Sunil showed off some Okura Ippon Kumite which the growing crowd really enjoyed.

Everyone was called up to show the power in our kicks by performing mae geri and mawashi geri on the body shields before Angie and Rose showed off some spinning hook kicks. This was followed by Matt and Sunil performing their spinning jumping kicks getting some impressive height in their jumps.

Sensei Martin demonstrating Okura Ippon Kumite After all the kicks we put on our kumite pads and proceeded to pair up and fight each other using our full array of techniques, but maintaining good control. As the finale approached we set out the mats and everyone finished the display with flying kicks into the bags.

As is usual at the end, we lined up to Bow and show our respects at the end as the crowd gave us a well deserved round of applause. I would like to thank all the children, adults and parents who came along to show us some support on the day.

-- S.K.O. National Championships 2007 --

The 19th August 2007 played host to the Ramgarhia Jassa Singh Championships held at Brunell University. Seaford Karate Club only sent a small squad of 6 to enter into both the Kata and Kumite Events.

Matthew Delaloye was first to compete in the kata event in the 'mixed under 16s novice category' (0-7th Kyu). Matthew performed a strong Heian Shodan which earnt him an easy 2nd place.

Next Sarah Dumelow competed in the over 16s mixed novice category (0-7th Kyu). She performed a strong Taikyokyu Shodan. Which although facing tough competition saw her miss third place by only one point.

Emily Delaloye was next on the mats in the under 16s advanced category, (3 Kyu and above). Emily performed a solid Heian Godan which saw her top the score board to progress to the final. Another strong performance, this time the kata Bassai Dai saw her top the scores again to take an easy first place.

Simon LambertThe next event the 'over 16s male advanced category' (3 Kyu and above) saw Sensei Steve Jakes, Simon Lambert and Simon Hill compete. Steve Jakes was first and performed Bassai Dai, Simon Lambert performed Heian Godan as did Simon Hill. Simon Hill and Steve Jakes performed strong katas, Simon Lambert started strong but made a mistake, hopefully he can learn from this for future events. Unfortunately a strong field in this category meant that no one from Seaford progressed to the final.

After a short lunch break for the referees the Kumite got under way. Again Matthew Delaloye was first to compete in the 'boys under 16s novice category' (0-7th Kyu). After giving a point away for contact to the face Matthew composed himself fought well fight scoring with a flurry of Gyaku Tsuki to win his first fight. He then fought again in the final, he scored again with strong and well timed Gyaku Tsuki but unfortunately lost to a strong opponent. This earnt him second place.

Sarah Dumelow took to the mats in the over 16s ladies novice category (0-7th Kyu). Although it was her first ever competition she showed no nerves as the fight got under way. Points went back and forth between opponents before she saw her opportunity to turn an attacking kick and score two points with a Gyaku Tsuki to the back. This clenched the win. Her second fight saw her face a tough opponent. She scored again with punches but unfortunately lost to a stronger opponent. This gave her second place, a very good result for a first tournament.

Next to compete was Simon Lambert in the 'Adult, male advanced category' 3 Kyu and above (over 70kg). Simon took to the mats for his first fight. This was a tough fight seeing both fighters given warnings for contact and over aggression. After settling down the opponents both scored with combinations and kicks. Unfortunately Simon lost this fight to the stronger opponent. His second fight was another tough fight. Simon scored with some combinations before being awarded a number of points for his opponents' excessive contact which lead to a bleeding nose and injured thumb. At the end of the fight Simon took the win which saw him finish in third place.

Simon Hill and Steve JakesNext to compete was Sensei Steve Jakes and Simon Hill in the 'Adult, male advanced category' 3 Kyu and above (under 70kg). With three fighters in the category every fighter had two fights. Simon fought first, Simon scored with both Gyaku Tsuki and kicks but his opponent (and overall winner) took the win. Next saw Sensei Steve and Simon face off, these two opponents know each other very well and the fight saw points going back and forth. Both Sensei Steve and Simon scored with combinations and kicks to see this fight finish a draw. Next saw Sensei Steve fight. Steve came out looking for the win. He fought strongly trying a wide range of combinations finishing with some good head kicks. Sensei Steve's opponent
was a strong fighter and gave a good very tough fight. At the end of the fight Steve lost narrowly missing first by one point. This saw Sensei Steve take a well earned second.

Seaford total for the day: 1-First, 4- Seconds and 2-thirds.
