-- Seaford Karate Club Championships --

Seaford Karate Club recently held their annual club championships under the experienced organisation of Sensei Martin Dean.

The children's event started the evening with junior novice kata (demonstration) and Chris Fleischer easily winning the event followed by a good performance by Connor Smith and Daisy Franks winning bronze.

The Junior advance kata was hotly contested and finished with a draw for first and third places. After a tie-break the event saw Emily Delaloye win first place taking the gold medal, Sharnie Franks taking Silver and Damien Shephard taking the bronze.

In the senior novice event Cristina Franks won the bronze narrowly beating her younger sister Polly, while a draw beaten Natalie Boden and Elizabet Franks saw another tie-break. Natalie won the extra match 2-1 to win gold leaving Elizabet with silver.

The senior advance kata saw Simon Lambert perform to his very best and easily win the senior title leaving Emily Delaloye in second with a silver medal. A sick Angie Pepper then had to perform twice to beat Simon Hill for the bronze.

The kumite (fighting) events started again with the children. Chris Fleischer won his event in style winning 10-4 in the first round and 6-0 in the final to take his second gold of the evening, leaving Daisy Franks to collect silver and Kallum Harding beating Max Polling 4-0 for the bronze medal.

In the 9-13 years kumite the experienced George and Sharnie Franks both fought through to the finals where they met each other. George won his fights 4-0 and 5-1 while Sharnie won 11-2 and 11-9. A close fight between brother and sister saw George just edge the result 6-4 to take gold, with Sharnie taking her second silver and Damien Shephard beating Ryan Burton 6-4 to win the bronze.

The senior novice kumite saw three sisters battle it out in a round robin match. Polly started well winning 4-0 against Elizabet. Then Cristina also beat Elizabet 6-0 leaving the winner of the last fight to take gold. Cristina and Polly finished the fight as a draw 4-4, but a count up of points gave Cristina the gold, Polly the silver and Elizabet the bronze medal.

The senior advanced kumite saw Simon Hill win 2-0 and Simon Lambert win 10-1 to qualify for the final. A rough, tough fight between these two strong fighters saw points going back and forth. Eventually at the end of two minutes Simon Lambert finished one point ahead 8-7 to win the gold, Simon Hill taking silver and Ben Allchin defeating Simon Poulter 4-0 in the fight-off for the bronze medal.

Many thanks to everyone who helped set up and run the evening, and all the parents who stayed to watch and support the club.

-- A.S.K.A. National Karate Championships 2005 --

Several hundred people including over 120 competitors attended the 2005 A.S.K.A. National Championships in Birmingham on Sunday November the 6th. As usual, A.S.K.A. Chief Instructor Sensei Colin Hexley and his team had surpassed themselves with the organisation of A.S.K.A.'s annual competition.

Some of Seaford's SquadSeaford Karate Club took a young squad of 13 including 2 who had never competed before and 3 for whom it was going to be their first championships competing at senior grade. Sensei Martin Dean and Sempai Rob Allchin were over seeing coaching duties.

KATA
In the first event sisters Polly and Elizabeth Franks narrowly lost in the first round despite putting on a good display, but Natalie Boden made it through to the semi-finals winning 3-0 in the first round. She met the eventual category winner, Carla Tamilio, in the semi-finals and was beaten but gained the bronze medal for her efforts.

In the next event Emily Delaloye showed improvement in her kata but lost first round 1-2. The men's novice kata saw Simon Hill win his first round but then lost to the eventual silver medalist, while Simon Lambert also narrowly failed to make the medals, losing 1-2. Simone Poulter won her first round 3-0 to make the semi final where she was beaten and finished with a creditable bronze medal.

In the female senior kata category Seaford had 3 club members participating, Danielle Allchin, Rose Franks and Angie Pepper. As all three had only recentlyASKA Women's Kata Champions gained their brown belts and Danielle and Rose had only recently turned 16; this was the first senior competition for all three. Angie and Danielle received byes into the next round but Rose had drawn favourite 1st Dan Hannah Hassel in the first round. Rose performed Kata Bassai Dai which could not compete with the Jion by Hannah. Angie faced Hannah's mum, Black Belt Iris Hassel. Both performed Bassai Dai with Angie's stances and strength over coming Iris to win the draw 2-1 to put Angie into the final. Danielle had to face Hannah Hassel in the next round. Danielle performed the Kata Gojushiho Sho which was going very well until a big wobble after a difficult turn. This helped Hannah win the round to go through to the final with Angie. Danielle then had to compete against fellow Seaford team mate Rose for the bronze. Both girls performed Kata Chinte. Danielle's confidence with this Kata showed beating Rose 3-0 and taking the bronze medal. In the final Angie performed well but the pressure of her first senior final showed and Hannah Hassel the young but very experienced competitor beat Angie's kata Chinte with a solid Kanku Sho leaving Angie with the silver.

In the team kata event Seaford entered two teams. The novice team showed promise for the future but were beaten 3-0 while the ladies put in a strong effort narrowly beaten 2-1 in the senior category and winning a bronze team medal.

KUMITE
The kumite (fighting) started with Chris Fleischer in the children's category showing some good techniques firing kicks and punches but not scoring effectively. After winning his first fight the second round proved tougher and he was finally beaten.

Brother and Sister, George and Sharnie Franks, were up next in the same category. George faced a hard first fight as both fighters matched each other evenly. His opponent final broke the deadlock and won the fight
1-0. Sharnie fought just as well and won her first fight 2-1. In her second fight she took too long to score her points going 4-0 down before winning the last two points, but it wasn't enough and she lost the fight 2-4 to finish with a bronze medal.

Rose Franks. ASKA Women's National ChampionThe Female Open Kumite saw two of Seaford's squad doing battle, Angie Pepper and Rose Franks. After both showing great fighting skills, determination, courage and winning hard fought early rounds and the semi-finals, the two were set to meet in the final. The fight was very tight with one score followed quickly by the other. Angie's wiliness was evenly matched by Rose's speed. Rose eventually won the fight and the championship with a great combination with the score of 3-2 with Angie taking a well deserved silver.

Simon Hill and Simon Lambert were representing Seaford in the Male Novice category. Unfortunately both met stronger opponents in the first round and both were beaten. Seaford's Kumite Team were also beaten in the first round.

-- Sensei Paul Burton 3rd Dan announces his retirement from karate --

Sensei Paul as part of SKC 1985 National SquadAfter 27 years in the art of karate Sensei Paul Burton will be sadly hanging up his karate-gi at the end of 2005. Sensei Paul has taken the hard decision to retire from karate, and it has not been an easy one for him, but the main reason is pressure of work commitments. Sensei Paul started training at Seaford on the very first night that the club opened back in 1978 under Sensei Steve Earl. Since then he went on the pass his 1st and 2nd Dan black belts before going to Eastbourne and opening his own dojo, where he taught for 10 years. In 1995 he came back to Seaford Karate Club and passed his 3rd Dan. That same year the junior instructor retired and Sensei Paul stepped forward to take on the junior side of Seaford Karate Club. He has taught that class for the last 10 years watching all his sons train under him with Dean passing 1st Dan black belt. As well as teaching Sensei Paul also ran the club finances, club shop, organising the Christmas party and club championships. Sensei Paul will be greatly missed by everyone at Seaford Karate Club.

-- F.S.K.A. Seminar --

Shihan Kenneth Funakoshi 9th Dan with Sensei MartinShihan Kenneth Funakoshi 9th Dan teaches at Crawley Leisure Centre twice a year for three-day seminars. Friday evening is kata bunkai night, while Saturday and Sunday are the traditional kihon, kata and kumite.

In October's seminar Angie Pepper 3rd Kyu from Seaford attended the course and was introduced to Shihan by Sensei Martin Dean during the lunch break. Angie was put through her paces by Shihan with over three hours of basics which helped improve her techniques and understanding of performing the techniques properly.

Shihan Funakoshi has a really relaxed way about teaching and tries to make it fun for everyone, but the emphasis is always about being a good karateka and understanding the history and philosophy of what you are doing. These courses are of course hard work, but thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding. A recommendation for every karateka.

The dates of the next course are:- Friday 17th March 2006 8pm- 10pm, Saturday 18th March and Sunday 19th March 2006 11am - 12.30pm and 1.30pm - 3pm
Cost: £40 - Advanced payment only and to include at least one day of the weekend course or £55 - All 3 days
